What Is a Fasting Retreat? Definition, Structure, What to Watch Out For

Fasting often gets mentioned in the same breath as retreats - but it's its own topic with its own rules. What makes a fasting retreat, and what actually matters.

What Is a Fasting Retreat? Definition, Structure, What to Watch Out For

Definition

A fasting retreat is a time-limited withdrawal from everyday life during which you abstain fully or partially from solid food for a set period - usually paired with rest, outdoor movement, and a reduced program. Unlike a general retreat, the focus here isn't meditation or creative work, but the physical process of fasting itself.

What a typical fasting retreat looks like

  • One or two easing-in days before the actual fast (cutting out meat, alcohol, sugar)
  • The fasting days themselves, usually with tea, broth, and plenty of water instead of solid food
  • Outdoor movement (walking, light hiking) rather than intense exercise
  • A gentle re-feeding period at the end, slowly reintroducing solid food

How it differs from a classic retreat

A classic retreat (yoga, meditation, silence) mainly reduces external stimuli and program. A fasting retreat also reduces food intake - which makes it physically more demanding and less freely combinable: someone fasting needs different conditions (quiet, no temptation from full meals in company, access to their own kitchen for tea and broth) than someone simply looking for a quiet weekend.

What to watch out for

Multi-day fasting isn't a diet and shouldn't be started spontaneously without preparation. Key points beforehand:

  • Get medical clearance, especially with pre-existing conditions, medication, or pregnancy
  • Set realistic expectations: the first day or two of fasting are the hardest for most people
  • Plan enough time for re-feeding afterward, rather than eating normally right after the last fasting day
  • Choose accommodation that isn't itself a temptation (breakfast buffet, half board) - a vacation apartment with its own kitchen has the advantage here

What this looks like at Johann & Anna

We don't offer a fasting program or fasting guidance - anyone fasting here organizes it themselves or brings their own plan. What we do offer: five self-contained apartments each with their own kitchen, a garden by the Stainzbach for walks, and no reception desk or half-board service competing for your attention. For anyone looking for a quiet, self-directed setting rather than a supervised fasting hotel.

Is fasting suitable for everyone?

No. Multi-day fasting should be cleared with a doctor beforehand, especially with pre-existing conditions, medication, pregnancy, or being underweight. This page is not a substitute for medical advice.

Does Johann & Anna offer fasting guidance or a fasting program?

No. We're not a fasting hotel and don't provide fasting supervision, coaching, or a nutrition program. What we offer is a quiet setting with no reception desk and no second stream of guests - for people organizing their own fast or bringing guidance they've already arranged elsewhere (for example online, or through a fasting coach beforehand).

Can I cook normally in the apartment if I'm not fasting?

Yes - each of our five apartments has its own kitchen. That also works well if only one person in the room is fasting while the other eats normally, or for the gentle re-feeding period after a fast.

How long does a typical fasting retreat last?

Often 5 to 7 days, usually with one or two easing-in days beforehand and a gentle re-feeding period afterward. Shorter formats (2-3 days, such as intermittent fasting) are common too.
