The Best Places to Visit in West Styria
The best trips from Stainz are closer than most people assume. This overview is therefore sorted not by fame but by driving time - from the destinations you can walk to, to the ones that take a full day.
West Styria has no single destination that coaches drive to - and that is its greatest advantage. What it has is an unusually high density of mid-sized destinations within half an hour: a castle, a church by Hundertwasser, a stud farm with white horses, a thermal spa, two castles, and a historic narrow-gauge railway. None of them fills a whole day. Two of them together do.
This overview is therefore sorted by driving time rather than by fame. If you are unsure how much to take on: two destinations a day is a full program in this region, three is too many.
On foot: what lies in Stainz itself
Stainz Castle. The former Augustinian monastery is visible from every point in the village and a few minutes' walk away. Archduke Johann acquired it in the 19th century; today it houses the hunting museum and the agriculture museum, both part of the Universalmuseum Joanneum. The Stainz outdoor pool. Redesigned in 2025 and a few minutes away on foot: a classic village pool without a slide tower, and correspondingly relaxed. The obvious plan on hot afternoons. More on it
The village centre and the first vineyards. Not a destination in the narrow sense, but the reason most guests end up driving less than they planned. Twenty minutes on foot puts you in the first vineyard slopes. Routes and distances are under Hiking around Stainz.
Why proximity is worth more here than the sight itself
A destination forty minutes away costs two and a half hours more, there and back, than one around the corner. In a region where the landscape is the best part anyway, that rarely pays off. Which is why this list deliberately thins out toward the bottom rather than thickening.
Within 30 minutes by car: the core of the region
Bärnbach: Hundertwasser church and Stölzle Glass Center. The parish church of St. Barbara, redesigned by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, and the glass museum sit close together and make a good half day - both largely under cover and therefore suited to grey days. About 25 minutes. More
Lipizzaner stud farm Piber. The stud farm near Köflach breeds the Lipizzaners for the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Mares, foals, and the breeding facilities can be visited; it is open daily in the summer months and on reduced hours out of season. For families with children, the most reliable destination in the area. About 25 minutes.

Deutschlandsberg Castle. The castle above the West Styrian district capital houses a museum and a restaurant, and combines well with a walk through the town. About 20 minutes. More
Ligist Castle Ruins. The quietest of the three sites nearby: no ticket desk, no guided tour, no operation. A good stop on the way to a wine tavern. About 20 minutes. More
The Flascherlzug. The historic narrow-gauge railway runs seasonally through the Schilcherland and shows the vineyards from an angle you do not get by car. Timetables change from year to year and should be checked before you travel.

Two destinations, one day
The sensible combinations follow the geography, not the theme: Bärnbach and Piber lie on the same route, as do Deutschlandsberg and Ligist. Pair the spa with the stud farm and you do fine - pair Bärnbach with Deutschlandsberg and you drive an hour for nothing.
Within an hour: Graz
Graz is about forty minutes away by car, which makes it realistic even for half a day. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, joined by Schloss Eggenberg - the largest baroque palace in Styria and also UNESCO-listed - the Kunsthaus, the clock tower on the Schlossberg, and the provincial armoury.
For guests arriving from a large city, Graz is rarely the reason for the trip. For everyone else it is the day you notice how practical West Styria's location is: city and quiet on the same day, without moving house.

The peacocks of Eggenberg
Peacocks roam the park of Schloss Eggenberg freely, and for children that is usually the part of the day that sticks while the adults tour the state rooms. The park is open to all, the rooms only on a guided tour, and the last tour starts earlier than you would expect.
A full day: Styria's big destinations
These are worth the trip but cost a whole day including travel. If you only have a weekend, leave them out.
Why Riegersburg takes a whole day
The castle sits on a volcanic rock, and the walk up passes through several gates – a good twenty minutes if you skip the lift. Add the birds-of-prey centre and the drive, and the day is full. That is exactly why it is listed here rather than among the half-day trips.
- Riegersburg (about 1.5 hours) - one of Austria's most impressive castle complexes, on a volcanic rock in south-eastern Styria.
- Tierwelt Herberstein (about 1.5 hours) - animal park, castle, and gardens in one, the most family-friendly of the more distant destinations.
- Therme Loipersdorf, Rogner Bad Blumau, or Bad Waltersdorf (about 1.5 to 2 hours) - the Styrian spa country in the east.
- Dachstein glacier (about 2 hours) - cable car, skywalk, and ice palace, for a day in the high mountains.
The furthest point on this list
There is snow on the Dachstein even in summer, and that is the real reason for the drive: from the vineyards into high alpine terrain and back in a single day. It is two hours each way, though, and the cable car stops running in high wind – checking the forecast the night before is part of the plan.
How to plan a day out that does not feel like work
Three observations from practice:
First: the journey here is often better than the destination. The roads through the vineyards are narrow, winding, and beautiful - and choosing your route by satnav misses exactly that. A deliberate detour over the ridges costs twenty minutes and turns the drive into the main event.
Second: opening hours matter more here than in cities. Museums, the stud farm, and the wine taverns have closing days, many of them Monday and Tuesday. A look at the website the evening before saves a locked door.
Third: the day without an outing is part of the plan, not its failure. Stay a week and fill five days with trips and you never reach the point where the holiday begins - more under Vacation in West Styria.
