Bärnbach: Hundertwasser Church & Stölzle Glass
Bärnbach doesn't need a whole day. An hour or two is enough for a place that stays with you regardless – mostly because of a church you won't see the likes of anywhere else.
The Hundertwasser Church
Friedensreich Hundertwasser redesigned Bärnbach's parish church in the 1980s – colorful towers in gold and blue, a golden onion dome, a portal unlike any other church in the region, and a tower that leans deliberately off-kilter. Unusual, but surprisingly quiet to visit, since the town itself stays small and isn't built for crowds.
Stölzle Glass and the Glassmaking Tradition
Bärnbach has a long history as a glassmaking town – glassworks settled here as far back as the 19th century. Anyone interested in craft and production will find in Stölzle Glass a calm counterpart to the purely sightseeing church: glassblowing as a living tradition, not a museum piece.
One Possible Itinerary
Arrive in the morning, take a walk around and inside the church, then a short detour to Stölzle Glass or the town center. If you like, combine the trip with a stop in Voitsberg on the way back.
