Arriving & Finding Peace: What Really Makes a Retreat Work
What actually makes the difference between a retreat that stays with you and one you've forgotten within two weeks?

Often it isn't the program itself. Two retreats with the exact same yoga sequence, the same meditation times, can feel completely different — depending on what happens in the gaps in between.
Arriving Takes Time That Isn't Scheduled
A retreat that's scheduled solid from morning to night can be more exhausting than the everyday life you were trying to leave behind in the first place. The spaces in between — a walk with no destination, a cup of coffee with no set time, a conversation that wasn't on the agenda — are often what actually stays with you.
Three Signs a Retreat Is Really Working
- You can feel the difference between day one and the last day — not just because the program was good, but because real rest happened in between.
- By the end, the group talks less about the program and more about what happened in between — a walk, a conversation over the garden fence.
- On the last evening, nobody asks what's next — because right then, nothing has to be next.
What This Means for the Location
- A place to retreat to: your own space to withdraw to between sessions, instead of being with the group the whole time.
- Nature without distraction: a garden or stream right outside the door often does more than an extra item on the program.
- No second agenda: a place without its own hotel program leaves room for the program the group brings itself.
At Johann & Anna in Stainz, this is exactly what we try to make possible — not by adding more, but by leaving out everything that isn't needed. Five apartments, a garden on the Stainzbach, and above all: time that nobody schedules for you.
