Johann & Anna

The Archduke and the Postmaster's Daughter

The relationship between Archduke Johann and Anna Plochl (1804–1885), the daughter of a postmaster from Aussee in Styria, began in 1819. At the time, Anna was only 15 years old, and Johann was about 20 years older.

Their relationship was remarkably resilient, even though they faced many obstacles. Romances between members of the imperial family and partners from non-aristocratic circles were not uncommon, and they often lasted. However, such relationships had to be handled discreetly and generally remained unofficial.

Archduke Johann, however, sought official recognition of his relationship with Anna. He cautiously began to pursue this goal. Four years after their first meeting, he approached his brother, the Emperor, and broached the subject that had long been the subject of gossip at the Viennese court. Emperor Franz initially expressed his approval, but soon withdrew it.

Johann, however, insisted on entering into a formal marriage, which sent shockwaves through the imperial family. The fact that a member of the imperial family wanted to marry a commoner came as a shock to the aristocratic society at the court in Vienna—something that had never been heard of before. Emperor Franz and the majority of the Habsburg family strictly opposed such a marriage.

Ultimately, Johann was allowed to live with Anna as her “housekeeper,” though public emphasis was placed on abstinence in order to preserve Anna’s reputation.

In 1829, Emperor Franz finally consented to the marriage. The wedding took place quickly and without much fanfare, as it was not publicly announced. It was not until 1833 that Johann was allowed to officially recognize his wife. Anna was elevated to the title of “Baroness von Brandhofen” in 1834.

However, the price for the emperor’s consent was that Anna and her descendants would not be recognized as members of the imperial family. Her only child, Franz Ludwig, born in 1839, was granted the title “Count of Merano.” His numerous descendants bear this name to this day. The family seat is Schenna Castle near Merano in South Tyrol, which Johann had acquired in 1845.

There, in the family crypt, lie the remains of Archduke Johann and his wife Anna, who outlived him by 26 years.
